Anne and Ian would like to welcome you to Bootham Gardens - a purpose built hotel-type guesthouse, which is the realisation of our dream; it allows us to combine our passions for meeting people, cooking the finest foods and gardening - all in the city we love. We are proud to offer a warm welcome and friendly service in a relaxing atmosphere.
We were possibly the first York establishment to be awarded ‘The Delicious Yorkshire Breakfast' award. Start the day with a full Yorkshire or a speciality breakfast from Gary Rhodes, Rick Stein, Andy Worrall-Thompson, Nigella Lawson, Raymond Blanc or Jamie Oliver, accompanied by preserves made by Ian.
Leave your car in our own private car park, take a five minute stroll into the city & return to laze in one of our private gardens, sipping a wine you supplied & we chilled or drinking more free tea/ coffee in the lounge. Unlike most York guesthouses we do not lay up the resident’s lounge for breakfast until evening so it is there for your use. Being purpose-built enables us to offer you features that most guesthouses do not have including soundproofing, broadband in all rooms, quiet garden areas, spacious bedrooms and proper en suite bathrooms.
If you are seeking ‘chintz’, floral wallpaper, scatter cushions, multicoloured bedspreads, pot - pouris, air fresheners, stuffed dolls, ornaments, personal pictures, or anything else that gathers dust then we are not for you. The rooms are minimalist; the decor was designed, by Dulux consultants, to provide a warm ambience. We believe in ‘function over form’ and ‘less is more’. However, we have not cut costs. For instance your oak bedroom door cost £500, the oak lounge floor £57 per sq. m. the beds are hand - made in York and the cutlery is Arthur Price, the guest house computer setup is top of the range with commercial speed broadband etc.
We have both travelled extensively and stayed in numerous hotels and guesthouses. We used this experience to design a guesthouse where we would be happy to stay. The main difference between us and other guesthouses are that ours is purpose built (not a conversion) and it is separate to our living quarters. This means that you do not feel you are imposing on our space but we are still on hand if needed. We have incorporated features and facilities that make us particularly attractive to the following groups, those who frequently stay in hotels, grown-up daughter and Mum seeking some quality time together, those away from home for a longer than usual period, folk who enjoy great food, anti smokers, vegetarians/vegans and those less than 100% fit and people working away from home.We do not simply see our role as accommodating and feeding you. We have a strong desire to ensure that you enjoy your stay in York. We have a great depth of knowledge concerning all aspects of York and are keen to share this knowledge with you. This approach seems to work as VisitBritain shows us having a 95% occupancy rate (average 36%), for 2008.
